HOUSING

Help plan Glasgow Residents Network conference – ongoing

Glasgow Residents Network is to host a conference this summer, to establish a federation of residents bodies. There are groups and individuals active in fighting unwanted
developments, fighting for better social housing, or against
demolitions and groups fighting against homeowners charges (and much
much else besides).

We are therefore calling on individuals from across the city to help
plan and co-ordinate the conference with us. It’s likely to be held
in August or September. We need your ideas for what should be on the
agenda, so that we can really get this off the ground with a bang!
There are likely to be a large number of community campaigners like
yourselves in attendance and so it’s vital that we get this planning
right.

If you or your group would like to be involved in planning the
conference please email us at this address or get back to us at
07976718111, and we’ll make it happen together.

If you can help, please get in touch today!

Update – 20/06/07

Posted by cedarphotos on June 20, 2007

Welcome to another Glasgow Autonomy Update.

This weekend, a major conference on human rights and sustainability comes to Glasgow. Why is there war in Iraq? What’s the cause of so many human rights abuses in Colombia? “It’s the oil stupid!” Check the sustainability section for more details.

Refugee week is off to a great start with several asylum seeking families in Glasgow being granted 3 years’ leave to remain. But you can still help destitute refugees at tomorrow’s sponsored Positive Action in Housing sleepout, and celebrate diversity at Saturday’s Unity party. Information in the Refugees section.

Have a good week!

Daily protests at the Home Office – Monday 17th – Sunday 24th June

Next week is Refugee Week.
Come along to the Home Office, 12-2pm every day to join the protest!

Bring balloons, flowers, photographs and paper hands with messages to hang on the fence of the Home Office to remind the people working there that there are 6,000 people whose lives are in their hands.

Too long we have been waiting for the Home Office to give us Justice.
We want an amnesty now!

Sleepout against destitution – Thursday 21st June

Positive Action in Housing is organising a sleepout in Glasgow City centre from 8.00 pm onwards.

Many people seeking asylum whose claims are turned down are unable to return home. But they are denied all state support, thrown out of their housing and are not allowed to work. They have no money for food, shelter, and the everyday things we take for granted. This misery is a direct consequence of government policy. Destitution is being used to drive people out of the country – but many thousands simply cannot leave and are now homeless and hungry.

The sleepout will be attended by members of the public, destitute asylum seekers, faith leaders, politicians and celebrities, all of whom are disgusted with the destitution policy towards asylum seekers. We expect a high turnout.

If you wish to take part, or help raise funds, please email robina@paih.org

Update 12/06/07

Posted by cedarphotos on June 12, 2007

Welcome to another Glasgow Autonomy Update.

Refugee week starts on Monday. While the state would like to appear anti-racist, the Home Office is in fact continuing to persecute asylum seekers – this week, another Glaswegian asylum-seeking family became the victims of a dawn raid. Check out the Refugees section for ideas on radical action you can take, both next week and longer term, so show support for refugees.

Have a good week!

ANTI-WAR

Power of the Word “Speak Out” at Faslane – Tuesday 5th June

A.L. Kennedy, Roger Lloyd Pack, Rebecca Thorn and Leon
Rosselson will be among a host of authors, poets,
singer-songwriters and actors taking part in the
second Power of the Word “speak-out” at the North Gate
of the Faslane nuclear submarine base, starting at 10.00 a.m.

With song, poetry, stand-up comedy and readings, the
writers and performers will entertain peace
protesters, local people and the police, showing the
Power of the Word in opposing the deployment and
planned replacement of the Trident nuclear weapon
system.

Silent Disco Faslane – Friday 8th June

FREE DANCING FUN – SAY “DUMP TRIDENT!”
BOOGIE AGAINST THE BOMB…
Dance for Peace… Music conquers war…
Shake your arse at warmongers and international criminals…

Come to the Naval Base at Faslane, not too far from Glasgow (too close in fact…), where THEY keep THEIR nuclear weapons – that’s right, WMDs like the ones “we” went to Iraq to stop Saddam from having, but which “we” can have right on our doorstep, courting terrorist attack and utter world-wide disaster…

Bring your own tunes – Walkpeople, personal cds, mp3s, fruit-themed-music-players are all welcome – and dance to demonstrate the spirit of humanity, love and good-times-for-all that will eventually defeat the global obsession with war and destruction…

PLACE : North Gate, HMNB Clyde, Faslane, near Helensburgh, near Glasgow… the public transport is good!
TIME : 3pm-ish until late… see myspace.com/silentdiscofaslane and future paper-based communications for updates or email silentdiscofaslane@hotmail.co.uk…

Family-friendly event – no drugs or booze – there will no doubt be plenty of coppers in attendance – they like a party.

Legal implications should be nil if you stay on the pavement – this is not a “blockade” as such. For those interested, visit www.faslane365.org for info. on the protests that have been going on of late against the nuclear war machine.

Faslane 365, get involved! – ongoing

Faslane 365 is a civil resistance project focussed in Scotland to

nuclear weapons by a continuous peaceful blockade of the Trident
base at Faslane.

25/04/07 Update

Posted by cedarphotos on April 25, 2007

Welcome to another Glasgow Autonomy Update.

This week brings two important demos. Tomorrow, commemorate the anniversary of Chernobyl outside Faslane nuclear base – details in the anti-war section. And this weekend, there’s another chance to show solidarity with Glasgow’s asylum seeking population (check out the Refugees section).

Meanwhile, remember Anti-Capitalist Mayday is next Tuesday. This week’s update has details of some of the planned events, but remember, it’s the workers’ holiday so if you want something to happen, organise it and let us know!

Have a good week!

Chernobyl Day at Faslane – Thursday 26th April

Thursday 26th April is the 21st anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster when a nuclear reactor in the Ukraine exploded and sent a radioactive cloud across Europe. As many as 60,000 people could die prematurely as a result of fall-out from the accident.

To mark the day, environmentalists will be gathering outside the Faslane submarine base from about 8am to rally, hold a die-in and to symbollically blockade the base where Trident nuclear weapons are based on board four nuclear-powered submarines.

Food will be provided by the Jeely Peace kitchen organised by Stirling CND.

Faslane 365, get involved! – ongoing

Faslane 365 is a civil resistance project focussed in Scotland to
apply critical public pressure for the disarmament of Britain’s
nuclear weapons by a continuous peaceful blockade of the Trident
base at Faslane.

We are inviting groups and individuals from a wide range of public
interest organisations to join in the blockade and to use the
opportunity to raise awareness of the issues that each group is
working on and to make the links between its core issues and how the
UK’s nuclear weapons system affects them.

Faslane Peace Camp needs visitors!

Faslane Peace Camp recently celebrated its 23rd year of direct
action to oppose the Trident nuclear submarines stationed 30 miles

Latest Update

Posted by cedarphotos on March 15, 2007

Welcome to another Glasgow Autonomy Update.

Parliament’s cowardly decision last night only shows that we can’t rely on politicians to do the right thing – so check out the Anti-War section for details of people who are taking direct action against WMD.

Meanwhile, tomorrow, help remember the life of a woman commited to direct action and peace. Join the vigil for Rachel Corrie – details in the Palestine section.

Have a good week!

REFUGEES

Join the Glasgow Asylum Bail Circle – ongoing

Do you have a spare room? If so you could help get an asylum seeker out of Dungavel detention centre. The people sent there have committed no crime and frequently become depressed and anxious during their detention.

If you can offer temporary accomodation and would like to be involved in this extremely rewarding project, please contact us via the Unity Centre.

The UNITY Centre, 30 Ibrox Street, Glasgow, G51 1AQ. Tel: 0141 427 7992

The Unity Centre – ongoing

UNITY is the new, rapidly growing, union of asylum seekers formed by
asylum seekers to fight for greater rights for asylum seekers and
sans papiers.

The UNITY Centre at 30 Ibrox Street is open five days a week near to
the Home Office Immigration centre. Here families who are scared of
being detained when reporting at the Immigration Centre can ’sign
in’ before reporting so we can quickly alert their lawyers, friends and relatives if they are detained.
We offer friendly, practical solidarity and mutual aid to all asylum
seekers, refugees and sans papiers. Phone our 24 hour action line on
0141 427 7992 if you need help.

The Centre is completley run by volunteers and funded by donations -
please get in touch to help this exciting, new project.

ANTI-WAR

Tea Party at Faslane – Saturday 24th March

We would like to cordially invite everyone to a tea
party outside the gates of Faslane nuclear base on
at about 1-o-clock onwards.

One of the aims of this entertainment is to counter
the barbarity of these nuclear weapons by holding a
tea party full of sophistication, poise and wisdom.

We hope to provide face painting for children and
refreshments for any animals wishing to attend.

Second Vanunu Freedom Ride – Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th April

A group of us is organising the 2nd Vanunu Freedom Ride, a
bicycle ride from Faslane to London via Glasgow and
Edinburgh in April 2007. We are aiming to highlight the persecution of
Mordechai Vanunu, the Israeli anti-nuclear whistle blower who was imprisoned for 18 years, and
spent 12 of these in solitary confinement. Although released from prison,
he is subject to many restrictions on his human rights, and as well as
calling for his full freedom, we oppose the existence of nuclear weapons (in
the Middle East as well as the UK and worldwide).

Our website is not fully up date, sadly, but can be
found at:

www.vanunufreedomride.org.uk

Help needed to publicise the ride, offer accomodation and organise events to coincide with the ride.

*Ride passes through Faslane, Glasgow and Edinburgh on Saturday 7th – Sunday 8th April. *

Women’s Action at Faslane – 28th and 29th May

The Second Faslane 365 Women’s Action at the Faslane nuclear base.. All women welcome,
for one day or more. Come to blockade or to support in other ways and
help get the message out.

Faslane Peace Camp recently celebrated its 23rd year of direct
action to oppose the Trident nuclear submarines stationed 30 miles
north of Glasgow. Visitors are always welcome, for a day, a week,
or longer!

Directions: Train from Glasgow Queen Street or 216 bus from Jamaica
Street to Helensburgh Central. Then catch the 316 bus to the peace
camp.

community, but fun too, then get in touch. Extra help is welcomed in
the gardenesp over the summer months, and with lots of other stuff too!
Visitor space is in a basic static caravan with wood burner.

PALESTINE

Remember Rachel Corrie – Friday 16th March

This friday is the 4 year anniversary of Rachel Corrie’s murder in Rafah, Gaza.
She was an American peace activist in Palestine.

A few of us from different backgrounds, Muslims, Arabs as well as UK born peace
activists and Jews will be remembering her at a public event outside Borders on
Buchanan St from 4-7 on Friday, 16th March. We will be giving out copies of her
emails where she very eloquently and humanly described the situation, in an
incredible amount of appreciation for the complexity and horror.

We will be reading a traditional Jewish prayer for mourners, and include not
just Rachel, but all those whose lives have been cut short by the occupation -
Palestinian, Israeli and internationals. For the sake of unity we will only be
including civilian deaths, although I am aware that there is a range of opinion
on this issue. I hope we can all agree that civilians on every
“side” of the conflict should be mourned.

There will also be traditional Arab/Palestinian/Lebanese customs to honour the
anniversary of her death.

Next to the memorial will be a stall selling Palestinian products with all the
money being returned to Palestinian civilian projects. See
http://www.gphrc.org/ for more details of that.

Please come along, bring your own ideas and materials. Please forward this on
to others who may be interested.
